Subway tile patterns are a timeless design feature that bring character and structure into any space. From bathrooms to kitchen splashbacks and even laundry walls, the subway tile patterns you choose can completely transform the look and feel of a room.
Originally popularised in the early 1900s, subway tiles were first used in the underground train stations of New York. Their clean lines and practical surface made them ideal for both public and domestic spaces—an aesthetic that remains just as loved today.
Today, these versatile tiles are available in a variety of colours, sizes, and textures, making it challenging to decide on the best layout. To assist you in choosing the ideal pattern for your space, we have compiled a selection of subway tile laying options.

1. Traditional Brick Bond Pattern
The traditional brick bond is the original method for laying subway tiles, dating back to early 20th-century design. It’s a timeless layout that brings balance, rhythm, and familiarity to any space.
This style exudes sophistication and enduring appeal. It works especially well with natural stone tiles and complements other tile shapes seamlessly, making it a versatile choice for both modern and classic interiors.
2. Classic Herringbone Pattern
If you’re aiming for a minimalistic yet intriguing look without using bold colours, the classic herringbone pattern is a beautiful choice. Try it with soft-toned natural stone tiles or textured white subway tiles for a timeless, layered effect.
This design instantly elevates any wall and works exceptionally well as a focal point. It’s a refined layout that’s unlikely to ever go out of style.

3. Double Herringbone Pattern
The double herringbone pattern takes the classic layout to the next level by pairing each tile. This creates a bolder, more intricate design that delivers extra visual impact.
It’s a fantastic choice if you want to add a touch of drama to an otherwise minimalist space. The layered effect still feels clean and elegant, but with a stylish twist.
4. Vertical Stack Pattern
Contemporary and stylish, the vertical stack pattern is one of the trendiest ways to lay subway tiles today. By stacking tiles in straight vertical lines, this layout feels fresh, minimal, and clean.
It also creates the illusion of higher ceilings, making rooms appear taller. Plus, it’s faster to install, which could save you both time and money — a win for you and your tiler.

5. Vertical Offset Subway Tile Pattern
Rotate the classic brick bond 90 degrees, and you’ve got the vertical offset pattern—a fresh, modern spin that draws the eye upward.
This layout helps elongate the space visually and adds a playful, contemporary edge compared to the traditional style. It works beautifully for full-height walls in bathrooms, laundries, or as a subtle feature in open-plan spaces.
To take it even further, consider pairing it with darker grout for added contrast and definition.

6. One Third Offset Pattern
This clever take on the classic brick layout gives a modern twist by shifting the tiles by one-third instead of the usual half. It’s a subtle detail that can make a big difference in how the wall feels — especially in clean, minimalist spaces.
In this project, we used our Alpes decorative subway tiles. Due to the height of the splashback, we decided to lay them horizontally in a 1/3 offset pattern. The goal was to keep the space feeling fresh and current while maintaining softness.
We’re absolutely thrilled with the final result of this laundry splashback — it feels layered, interesting, and still light and serene.

7. Diagonal Brick Bond Pattern
This layout takes a conventional subway tile and gives it a dynamic twist. By rotating the stacked brick pattern 45 degrees, the diagonal brick bond adds energy and movement to any space.
We used this look with our Artigiano range, which reflects light beautifully across the angled surface. It’s a great way to expand the visual width of a kitchen or splashback wall while still maintaining that timeless feel.
8. 90-Degree Herringbone Pattern
A bold variation of the classic, the 90-degree herringbone pattern turns tiles upward for a clean, architectural look. It’s an unexpected layout that makes a statement while feeling fresh and sophisticated.
This style works beautifully in smaller bathrooms and kitchens. By directing the eye upward or across, it creates a sense of spaciousness and flow — ideal for narrow walls or compact layouts.
It’s also great for spotlighting key areas, like vanities or mirrors, where you want just a touch of drama without overwhelming the space.

9. Mixed Pattern
Combining different tile layouts or finishes can be a creative way to bring energy and depth to a space. Whether it’s mixing gloss and matte tiles, or alternating patterns like vertical and stacked, the result is always uniquely yours.
This approach creates visual texture and contrast, giving your space a curated, editorial feel. It’s a fantastic choice for splashbacks or powder rooms where you want that “designer touch.”
We used this method in our Coconut tile project (in pink!) — and it turned out beautifully bold.
10. Horizontal Stack Pattern
This straightforward layout offers a clean, modern look while maintaining a timeless appeal. The horizontal stack pattern suits a wide range of bathroom styles — from minimalist to rustic — making it one of the most versatile options.
It’s especially effective in creating a sense of width, helping smaller bathrooms feel more spacious. We’ve showcased this look using our Rustico tile range, where the elongated lines added calm and balance to the space.
